How can I manage my emotional health? Knowing what you can do and the resources available to you is half the battle in improving your emotional well-being. Reduce stress by finding your
favorite stress-reducing activity, and schedule relaxation breaks into your day.
Some relaxation techniques include:
Regular exercise is essential for optimal health. Sustained, vigorous use of the muscles stimulates all tissues and increases circulation. Blood vessels dilate and blood pressure rises. As a result, tissues become oxygenated, which helps to clean the cells of toxins.Digestive glands secrete their fluids better and the bowels move more easily. Thus, your physical health has an overwhelming effect on improving your emotional well-being. Taking care of your body also includes getting plenty of rest (but not too much!) and eating well. Getting connected to your community is an excellent way to remain physically and mentally active throughout the day. Volunteering is an excellent way to get connected to other people, use old job skills and build new ones. Many retirees enjoy volunteering because it gives them a reason to get going in the morning. Social interaction is key to feeling fulfilled and keeping a positive outlook on life. Keeping your mind active helps keep you sharp and alert. Anger management, support groups, and exercise can all help to positively influence your emotional health. It's also important to keep the lines of communication open by talking to family, friends, or the counseling center. In this way, your social and emotional health come together. |
