How can I be more social? SeekHealth in Aging encourages you to budget time and take advantage of social opportunities with your family, your acquaintances, and/or your community. Remember that your social interaction brings someone else the benefits of a social interaction too! Regardless of other demands on your time, SeekHealth reminds you to invest time improving your social health. There are many different ways to be social, whether it is through sharing a sport, joining a club, volunteering with an organization, visiting a relative, chatting with a neighbor, signing up for a group outing, or just making time for yourself to go out with friends. Information about activities in your town or region are easy to find on the internet or look at the LINKS section here in the SeekHealth in Aging site. If you already have too much on your plate and think that you have no time for a social life, consider multitasking by making some task a social activity. One idea used by both busy executives as well as poor, sleep-deprived medical students has been to have a group of colleagues over for a meeting or intense study session and then to cook dinner together before or after. . Again, give thought to balancing your social life. If you are not regularly social, begin to “exercise your social muscles!” Take advantage of some of the social events listed in the LINKS or on the SeekHealth in Aging calendar. If your life is too social, leaving no time for properly nourishing your emotional, mental, or physical self, then reexamine your social calendar and priorities for the activities that are most meaningful. After all, the secret is simply balance. |
